Hyundai Motor's compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) Tucson has beat GM Korea's Trax to become Korea's No. 1 export car model.
Hyundai Motor exported a total of 83,579 units of the Tucson by April this year, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA). This was the largest volume among models exported by five domestic automakers – Hyundai, Kia, SsangYong, GM Korea, and Renault Samsung.
In the first three months of this year, the Trax came in first with exports of 62,228 units, 3,195 units more than the Tucson, which recorded 50,993 units. The Trax had been the export king for two consecutive years from 2017 to last year.
Hyundai Motor exported 24,486 units of the Tucson in April alone. The figure represented a 25 percent jump from the average monthly export volume of 19,997 units in the first quarter. GM Korea exported 20,189 units of the Trax, slightly less than the monthly average of 20,762 units in the first quarter.
Hyundai Motor's compact SUV Kona is threatening the Tucson and the Trax in the race to be crowned as Korea's No.1 export car model. The Kona, which was launched in 2017, sold 78,897 units in the first four months of the year. Unlike the Tucson or the Trax which currently have only internal combustion engine-powered models, the Kona has electric car versions. A hybrid model of the Kona will be added to the product group, giving it advantages over other competing models.
