Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) announced on February 5 that it achieved a historic record result in obtaining certifications of standards from various international standard-certifying bodies last year in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

According to ETRI, 132 expert positions and 196 chair positions were attained in 30 international certifying organizations, including the International Telecommunication Union, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the International Organization for Standardization. 1,717 certifying cases were written and published with participation by Korea’s certifying experts, which resulted in successfully securing 23 international standard certifications and 67 international patents, with 85 additional cases being considered for certification.

ETRI has obtained a significant number of certifications in areas such as beyond-4G technology in telecommunications, video encoding in broadcasting media, next-generation network technology, and Ubiquitous Sensor Networks, or USN. In particular, receiving certifications and patents in USN is a noteworthy achievement, since it paves the way for seamless interaction with an ICT paradigm-focused Internet environment, which is termed the Internet of Things, or IOT.

ETRI plans to further obtain certifications in future networking areas such as next-generation mobile technology 5G, IOT, and Software Definition Networking (SDN), as well as in Smart Media and software-centered ICT convergence.
