The Industry's First APs from 7-nm EUV Process

Samsung Electronics will release on April 30 the industry’s first application processor (AP) produced through a 7-nanometer (nm) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process.

Samsung Electronics will roll out on April 30 the industry’s first application processor (AP) produced through a 7-nanometer (nm) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process. The company plans to install the AP in the Galaxy Note 10 to be released in the second half of this year.

Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, will attend a ceremony marking the release of the 7-nm AP at the company’s Hwaseong Campus in Gyeonggi Province on April 30. Lee is expected to unveil a detailed plan to achieve the top spot in the global non-memory semiconductor sector.

Earlier on April 24, Samsung Electronics unveiled its “Semiconductor Vision 2030,” announcing its plan to invest 133 trillion won in the non-memory sector and employ 15,000 engineers by 2030. The Semiconductor Vision 2030 is the company’s first major investment plan since Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Electronics, launched a vision for five major new growth engines including biotech and batteries for electric cars in 2010.


Samsung Electronics is proving its technology in the non-memory sector by successfully operating the 7-nm EUV process for the first time in the semiconductor foundry market. The process is so difficult to develop that GlobalFoundries in the United States has reportedly decided to abandon it.
