South Korean e-commerce company Coupang announced on March 15 that it has appointed Jay Jorgensen, a former vice president at Walmart, as its new chief compliance officer (CCO) and general counsel.
Jorgensen is an expert in ethical management, compliance and risk management with diverse working experiences. The institutions where he has worked range from global leading retail companies and law firms to the Supreme Court in the United States.
Prior to joining Coupang, he had served as Walmart’s vice president and CCO for seven years since 2012. During these years, he made an effort to build and refine Walmart’s ethics program among employees and it was selected as the best governance, risk and compliance program by the New York Stock Exchange Governance Services in 2016.
In addition, Jorgensen served as a member of the Walmart Foundation’s board of directors and executive committee, helping direct the foundation’s activities and establish strategies to improve employment support programs and sustainability and strengthen community relations.
Jorgensen is also planning to focus on setting up a world-class compliance system to continuously impress customers and developing strategies to reinforce law observance in the future.
“Coupang is a fast growing global company and I am very glad that I can be part of this process of change and innovation,” said Jorgensen. “The company’s transparency and employee ethics is a crucial value for its sustainable growth worldwide, so I will establish a top compliance program to help Coupang become the most reliable company for customers.”
