Making a Hologram Call Between Seoul and L.A.

A holographic image of Jerry Greenberg, chairman of 7SIX9 Entertainment who is in Los Angeles, is presented on K-Live Stage in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul.

KT Corp. has successfully demonstrated holographic communications ahead of the launch of the world's first commercial 5G services.

KT demonstrated a “hologram call” between Seoul and Los Angeles by linking its 5G network to a floating hologram system at K-Live of the Nuri Dream Square in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on March 5.

The floating hologram system used by KT creates a holographic image by projecting a three-dimensional photo generated by holography onto a thin and transparent foil. This technique is often used in performances and advertisements because people in a holographic image can interact with real people.

During the demonstration, KT invited Jerry Greenberg, chairman of 7SIX9 Entertainment in Los Angeles, through the hologram system. Jerry Greenberg was in L.A. celebrating the release of “Let's Shut Up & Dance” Album, a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. KT has integrated tele-presence technology into its 5G network so that a holographic image of Jerry Greenberg could appear at K-Live Stage.

KT is planning to commercialize its hologram tele-presence technology, although a specific commercialization schedule has not yet been determined.
