LG Innotek announced on Feb. 19 that it has recently started mass production of the time of flight (ToF) 3D sensing module for smartphones. This module will be installed on the front of the company’s new flagship smartphone LG G8 ThinQ, which will be unveiled on Feb. 24.
The ToF module is a state-of-the-art 3D sensing device that recognizes the three-dimensional effect, spatial information, and movement of an object by calculating the distance using the time it takes for light emitted from the camera to reflect back.
The ToF module can be easily mounted on smartphones because it has a long 3D distance sensing range, low power consumption and can be produced thin. The module can be used to implement biometric authentication, motion recognition, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) functions.
The 3D sensing module market, including the ToF module, is expected to grow fast. The global 3D image processing and sensing device market is expected to more than triple from US$2.9 billion in 2018 to US$9 billion in 2022, according to global market research firm Yole Development.
LG Innotek plans to build its 3D sensing module business as a next-generation growth engine following the smartphone camera module.
