Restructuring of IBM Korea

IBM Korea will reorganize its mainframe and x86 server business units (BUs), which are showing poor performance these days.

According to industry sources, IBM Korea is planning to combine its mainframe business unit with UNIX BU, while integrating the x86 BU with the PureFlex division. The company informed each of its main and branch offices of the plan on January 7.

“I heard that IBM Korea notified its employees of the plan in the evening of January 8,” said a source at a partner firm, adding, “It is said that the general plan has already come out, but specific measures as to the reorganization have yet to be fixed.”

The reason for the reshuffle is to simplify the hardware business structure, the sales of which have decreased by a double-digit percentage for years, and to create some synergy. HP integrated its UNIX and x86 server BUs last year, too.

In the meantime, IBM Korea denied the news by saying, “We have not heard anything about such plans, and nothing has been fixed with regards to it.”
