According to industry sources on January 7, Mozilla is distributing a tablet version of Firefox OS, and will release a beta version of Firefox for smart TVs within the year.

Mozilla forged a partnership with Panasonic to build Firefox OS-based Smart TVs, which are scheduled to be released as early as the end of this year.

The running of Firefox OS is basically a web browser on top of a custom Linux distribution, which enables electronic program guides (EPGs) to be operated in the way the web works. This is one of the strong points Firefox has. A Korean version of Firefox OS is expected to be available in the second quarter of this year.

Experts are saying that Firefox OS cannot directly compete with Google’s Android, the world’s most popular smartphone platform. Nevertheless, the Linux-based platform is said to have secured a competitive advantage in smart home appliances thanks to its touted usability on low-spec systems.
