Tailored to Premium Notebooks

Samsung Display has developed the world's first ultra-high definition (UHD) organic light emitting diode (OLED) display for laptops, the company announced on Jan. 23.

The new product is a 15.6-inch UHD (3,840 × 2,160) OLED display based on ultra-high resolution technology. It is tailored to premium notebook PCs used for gaming, graphic design and videos. The brightness of the product is 0.0005 to 600 nit and features a contrast ratio of 1.2 million to one. Compared to a liquid crystal display (LCD), the product can show black color 200 times darker and white color more than two times brighter. So the product befits high quality videos and images.

In addition, based on OLEDs’ 34 million colors, the display completely fulfills “DCI-P3” which is an optimal color standard on video playbacks and realizes nearly natural colors. It also significantly reduces blue light harmful to the human eyes.

In particular, unlike desktops, laptops are used in different brightness in various surroundings as their users carry them here and there. The 15.6-inch OLED panel has a color volume 1.7 times higher than that of an LCD panel, preventing a steep drop in its screen quality when the laptop is used outdoors. Another merit of the product is that it is slimmer and lighter and consumes less power than LCDs.
