Winning Recognition in Overseas Markets
SsangYong Motor announced on Dec. 21 that the G4 Rexton, the company’s new flagship sports utility vehicle (SUV), has been selected as the ‘Premium SUV of the Year’ in India.
The selection was made by the world-renowned auto magazine Autocar. An award ceremony was held in Mumbai, India on Dec. 19 (local time).
In addition to the outstanding driving performance of the G4 Rexton, judges also praised the rugged and sophisticated design, luxurious interior, best-in-class safety features, convenience and versatility, according to SsangYong.
Ssangyong Motor signed a license contract with Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), an Indian multinational car manufacturing corporation, early this year for assembly production of the G4 Rexton in India. It began exporting them in May in the form of CKD. The premium SUV was officially launched in India in November under the name Alturas G4.
According to Ssangyong, Alturas is a plural form of Spanish word Altura, which means height and peak. The brand name means 'a car that guides those who are at the peak of life to the best.'
The Alturas G4, which is assembled at M&M's Chakan plant, is leading a new trend in India's large premium SUV market, competing with Toyota's Fortuner and Ford's Endeavour.
"The G4 Rexton, which was released in Korea in April last year, was selected as the best premium SUV in India after being selected as the best 4x4 of the Year 2018 in the U.K. The car’s high quality is recognized not only in Korea but in overseas markets,” said Choi Jong-shik, CEO of SsangYong Motor.
"We will continue to expand our global sales and strengthen our position as a global SUV company by developing new products that will lead the market and pioneering new markets," Choi added.
