Startup Develops AI-based Skincare Assistant

lululab, a member company of the K-ICT Born2Global Centre, has developed LUMINI, an AI-based skincare assistant consisting of a handheld scanning device and AI technology software.

lululab, a member company of the K-ICT Born2Global Centre, was selected as one of the "Winners of Cosmoprof Awards Asia" at COSMOPROF ASIA 2018, which was held in Hong Kong from Nov. 14-16.

The world's largest annual beauty fair, Cosmoprof has been held in Bologna (Italy), Las Vegas (United States), and Hong Kong. The Cosmoprof Awards are given to the best beauty products in each field that excel in terms of innovation, marketability, marketing influence, and brand power.

The grand prize winner in the skincare category, lululab's LUMINI is an artificial intelligence (AI) skincare assistant that analyzes the entire facial complexion in a snap and recommends specific skincare products for each user. It consists of a handheld scanning device and AI technology software, takes only 10 seconds to diagnose the skin and is highly accurate. LUMINI can also create skin big data through helping people understand their skin conditions and track changes, while providing data-based personalized solutions.

In particular, the Korean startup was acclaimed for adopting "data-based IT skincare technology," allowing it to offer customized beauty services that are easily accessible, which has been one of the most prominent trends in the beauty industry in recent years.

An official of the host of Cosmoprof Asia said that LUMINI is the first IT product to win the grand prize in the skincare category, which usually goes to a cosmetic product.

CEO Yongjoon Choe of lululab said, "This win shows that the trend of the beauty industry is evolving. We plan to collaborate with beauty companies around the world to make more customized, data-based IT services accessible to even more consumers."

lululab started as a spin-off of C-Lab, the in-house venture company program of Samsung Electronics. CES 2019, the world's largest consumer electronics fair, selected lululab as the "Innovation Honoree" in the Fitness, Sports and Biotech category. The company plans to accelerate its entry into the North American market by presenting LUMINI at the fair that will be held in Las Vegas next January.
