AI-based Mobile AP

Samsung Electronics will develop and mass produce the AI-based Exynos 9 mobile AP within this year.

Samsung Electronics has unveiled its latest premium mobile application processor (AP), the Exynos 9, with optimized artificial intelligence (AI) features. Accordingly, AI performance of Samsung’s next flagship smartphone (expected to be named the Galaxy S10), which will be launched next year, is expected to have differentiated features.

The South Korean tech giant said on Nov. 14 that it will develop and mass produce the Exynos 9 Series (9820) within this year.

The new chipset is equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) used for video and voice recognition, which will perform AI tasks about seven times faster than the existing predecessor Exynos 9810. The enhanced neural processing enables faster and more accurate recognition of characters and objects in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

For example, the NPU will automatically optimize the camera settings for a picture according to the surroundings, such as figure, location, and lighting. In particular, the Exynos 9820 is equipped with NPU for the on-device AI, which means that it does not need any more to connect to cloud servers for AI processing. This feature not only supports faster performance but also improves privacy security for users.

In addition, with the improved design of the fourth-generation custom single core, the Exynos 9820 performs around 20% faster with 40 percent power efficiency. This leads to faster processing and conversion of apps with improved data reading ability compared to the predecessor. The company also improved the multi-core performance by 15 percent by optimizing the Octacore CPU so that the core of each part can perform organically.

The Exynos 9820 is the industry's first to incorporate LTE Cat.20 8-carrier aggregation technology, paving its way for download speed of 2Gb per second (2Gbps). At this speed, a user can download a full high definition (FHD) quality movie (3.7GB) in about 15 seconds. Its upload speed goes up to 316Mbps. As it supports all 6 communication modes from second (2G) to fourth generations (4G), mobile devices equipped with this processor can be used anywhere in the world.
