No Other Alternative for LG U+

LG U+ has confirmed the introduction of Huawei equipment for its 5G services despite the lingering security concerns over it.

During a parliamentary audit of the Ministry of Science and ICT on Oct. 26, Rep. Park Sun-sook asked, “Is it inevitable for the company to use Huawei equipment for 5G services because it is already using Huawei equipment for 4G LTE services?”

To the question, LG U+ vice chairman Ha Hyun-hwoi, who attended the audit session as a witness, answered, “Yes. That is what we think.” Accordingly, LG U+ will use equipment from China’s Huawei together with that from Samsung Electronics and Ericsson.

If a company introduces 5G equipment from a vendor different from the vendors of its LTE equipment, it has to replace its LTE equipment with that of other manufacturers. Accordingly, it has been expected that LG U+, which uses Huawei equipment for LTE, will use Huawei equipment for 5G.

"We have never had security problems while using Huawei LTE equipment," said Ha. "We will establish a thorough monitoring system to ensure that no security problems take place in our 5G services."

In addition, LG U+ will soon announce a partnership with Netflix. The carrier has been working on partnership with Netflix for several months. Internally, the details of the contract are almost finalized, and the company is weighing the timing of announcement. The partnership will allow LG U+ IPTV subscribers to enjoy Netflix original content with the existing set-top box. LG U+ is expected to provide subscribers with a value-added service called “Netflix Rate System.” Some people have expressed concerns about the possibility of Netflix dominating the domestic media market and the unfairness of the contract between LG U+ and Netflix.
