Extra Fees for Melon License Download?

Lee Hyo-seong, chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), said on Oct. 29 that the KCC will investigate whether Apple's app store collects excessive fees.

Rep. Kim Sung-soo of the ruling Democratic Party said in a parliamentary audit of the commission, "If consumers download a license to use Melon from the iPhone app store, they should pay 8,000 won more in commission."

Melon is Korea's leading online music store and music streaming service.

"Consumers can download a Melon license from a PC, but Apple is said to have taken measures to prevent Melon from guiding the users," Kim said. “If you download a Melon license from your iPhone without knowing this, you become a stupid consumer.”

"We will investigate the situation properly," Lee said. "We believe that it should not happen, and we will make sure that consumers are not fooled."
