The Name of ‘Gear’ Disappears

The ‘Gear’ brand of Samsung Electronics has been virtually scratched off.

Samsung Electronics will integrate all of its mobile devices into the "Galaxy" brand. The integration is seen as a move to maximize synergies among its mobile devices.

According to the mobile device industry and foreign news organizations on October 7, Samsung Electronics registered "Galaxy 360" and "Galaxy VR" trademarks in the U.S. Patent Office this month so the "Gear 360" and the "Gear VR" will be launched as the Galaxy 360 and the Galaxy VR, respectively. As a result, the Gear brand has been virtually scratched off.

The Galaxy 360 and the Galaxy VR are expected to be released along with the Galaxy S10, which will be the 10th anniversary edition of the Galaxy Smartphone, in the first half of next year.

The latest version of the Gear 360 came out in response to the launch of the Galaxy S8 last year. The product can take ultra-high-resolution 4k photos. The VR headset "Gear VR with Controller" which was introduced at the time features a gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor to detect a user's movement in real time.

"As VR devices are used with smartphones, they are highly likely to be released together with new smartphone next year," an industry watcher said. “It has also become more likely that the wireless earphone 'Gear Icon X' will be renamed. Last month, Samsung Electronics registered the brand 'Samsung Bud' in the European Patent Office. The company already released a new smart watch in August and changed its name from the Gear to the Galaxy Watch.
