Under Different Base Station Environment

KT succeeded in demonstrating a new technology that enables a large number of people to enjoy group telecommunication via base stations from different makers.

KT announced on September 12 that the company succeeded in a technological demonstration where a large number of people enjoyed group telecommunication via base stations from different makers. The demonstration took place between base station equipment made by Samsung Electronics and Nokia. This became the world's first successful demonstration of 'Rel.13 evolved multimedia broadcast multicast services (eMBMS)-based group communication service enabler (GCSE)' defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) at different public safety-LTE (PS-LTE) base stations.

The GCSE technology provides group communication to a large number of people in a specific area and empowers rescue workers in a large disaster-hit area to share situations in real time. For example, when a large wildfire occurs, the technology can be useful for an emergency patient search and putting out the fire.

However, until now, the GCSE technology based on eMBMS have had different methods of implementing core functions of equipment manufacturers and GCSE products of a manufacturer is not compatible with those of other manufacturers so it was possible to transmit contents through equipment of the same manufacturer only.

The success of this demonstration enabled base stations to realize group communication even if they have equipment manufactured by different companies with a single core device. Therefore, it is expected that this technological breakthrough will not only save companies cost and time but enhance operation efficiency. The new technology can be used for PS-LTE, LTE-Railway (LTE-R), and LTE-M which is a maritime wireless communication network as it can provide stable group call service even if calls are flooded due to a disaster.

In order to apply mission critical push to talk (MCPTT) technology to disaster safety communication networks, KT conducted an optimization test at its Public Safety Net Technology Test Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Through the test, the telecom giant is thoroughly preparing a disaster safety telecommunication network project while reconfirming the optimization of group calls compared to current pilot projects and an improvement in call processing performance.
