LG Hausys is expanding its engineered stone business in the North American market.

LG Hausys announced on September 10 that the company would invest a total of US$50 million in an artificial marble factory in Georgia, the U.S., to expand its engineered stone production line.

Engineered stone is a premium artificial marble. Natural quartz materials account for about 90% of engineered stone. Engineered stone looks like natural marble but outclasses natural marble in terms of processability and durability. Engineered stone is widely used in kitchen furniture, sinks, dining tables, various information desks for commercial facilities such as hotels and hospitals, counters and walls.

The new production line is scheduled to be completed in December 2019 with an annual production capacity of 350,000 square meters. When the expansion is completed, LG Hausys' total engineered stone production capacity will increase 50% from the current production capacity of 700,000 square meters to 1,050.000 square meters.

LG Hausys has been chalking up sales growth of over 20% by employing a thorough localization strategy from production to sales. It has established a sales subsidiary for the North American market in Canada in April of last year.

"The North American region is the core market that accounts for more than 70% of the global demand for engineered stone, which is estimated at worth 3 trillion won a year," said Kang Shin-woo, head of the Surface Material Business Division at LG Hausys. "We will prepare a springboard for a market leader position in the North American market by stepping up its sales activities in North America."

In the meantime, the global engineered stone market is led by three companies -- Cosentino in Spain, Caesar Stone in Israel and Cambria in the US. LG Hausys is trailing the top three.
