The Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA) announced on September 10 that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Lotte Asset Development, Lotte Engineering & Construction, and PT. PP, which is a state-run construction company of Indonesia, to develop Manggarai Station in Jakarta into a central transfer station. The signing ceremony was held in Seoul on the sidelines of the South Korean and Indonesian governments’ industrial cooperation forum.

Five railways, including a high-speed railway between Jakarta and Bandung, are scheduled to pass through Manggarai Station, which is slated to provide access to Bekasi, Depok and Bogor. According to the MOU, the South Korean companies and the KRNA are going to build housing and commercial facilities, a station building, a hotel, and other facilities in the surrounding area.

The KRNA already signed a contract with Indonesia for the 5.8 km-long first phase of the Jakarta LRT between Velodrome and KelapaGading stations. At present, it is trying to win the second and third phase construction projects as well. Based on the MOU, the KRNA is going to further its cooperation with Indonesia by establishing transport infrastructure and carrying out regional development there.

The industrial cooperation forum was held in conjunction with Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s state visit to South Korea. At the forum, about 380 participants, including the Indonesian president, the industry ministers of both countries, and those from 180 or so government agencies and companies, discussed how to expand bilateral economic cooperation.
