Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on December 16 that it won five very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) contracts from Scorpio Tankers. The combined contracts’ amount is approximately US$500 million.

Each of the marine vessels is about 336m in length and 60m in width with a total capacity of 300,000 tons. These will be equipped with high-efficiency engines and fuel-saving technologies, and will be delivered to the ordering body by the first half of 2016.

The ships are the first VLCCs ordered by Scorpio Tankers. The company has focused on small crude oil carriers, product oil carriers, and gas carriers. This year, it signed contracts with Daewoo for four product oil carriers and three very large gas carriers.

This is the first time in 23 months that Daewoo has won the contract for a VLCC with a capacity of 300,000 or more tons. Up to now, Daewoo has obtained 49 shipbuilding and offshore plant construction contracts with a combined amount of US$12.5 billion this year. Its goal for this year is US$13 billion.
