South Korea has drawn great attention from the world through the Korean Wave (also known as Hallyu ), including the international popularity of South Korean K-POP. The nation is now planning a shopping festival for foreign visitors. The 2012 Korea Grand Sale, organized by the Visit Korea Committee, is being held across the nation, including Seoul and capital regions, from January 9 to February 29, 2012 (52 days). A total of 77 businesses and 22,800 sole-proprietorships will participate in the festival, making it Korea's biggest shopping festival for foreign tourists.
Shop alongside Fun and Exciting Korean Culture Festival
The 2012 Korea Grand Sale is NOT just a shopping festival. Although international shopping festivals are held around the world, including Hong Kong and Singapore, the Korea Grand Sale provides the opportunity to experience exciting Hallyu content as well as special discounts. In addition, a part of the revenue will be donated to support projects for multicultural families. The Korea Grand Sale is ultimately a great opportunity to learn about Korean culture and experience great Korean hospitality and generosity.
Beginning January 9th, special welcome events will be conducted at Incheon International Airport for one week, including picture opportunities with Pororo, the mascot of Visit Korea Year, and the distribution of 100%-winning lottery scratch cards, with prizes including hotel stays, Korea Passes, and theater tickets.
During the festival, foreign shoppers who visit Hyundai Department Store can participate in a KRW 10 million wedding package lottery. Such packages have recently become popular in China and Southeast Asia. Participants can experience Korean wedding culture by borrowing a wedding dress and tuxedo and having a wedding photo taken. Those who visit Shinsegae Department Store and Lotte Department Store will also be given the opportunity to participate in the lottery.
Furthermore, Korean stars including Kim Tae-hui, Ahn Seong-gi, Lee Joon-gi and Kim Rae-won will participate in Photo Time events with children at DOOTA Shopping Mall, Lotte Department Store and Hyundai Department Store in order to increase public awareness of handicapped children being given up for adoption overseas. In particular, the revenue earned at DOOTA Shopping Mall will be fully donated.
There will also be a bazaar. The revenue earned through this charity event, including items donated by famous entertainers, and an exhibition, will be used to help immigrant women from multicultural families visit their hometowns, create a scholarship fund for children from multicultural families, and support living and medical expenses.
Free Amenities with Special Discounts and Promotions
During the Korea Grand Sale, a free shuttle bus (Seoul-Busan / Seoul-Jeonju) will operate once a day every day except for Mondays. Foreign visitors who book KTX train tickets through the Korea Visit Year's Web site (www.visitkoreayear.com) can receive discounts of up to 30%. In addition, there will be a free shuttle bus in Gangam-gu which stops at major shopping spots such as Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, Cheongdam-dong and Apgujeong three times a day (once in the morning, twice in the afternoon) three times a week (Tue., Thu., Sat.).
