LG U+ announced on August 12 that the company acquired the Open Virtual Platform (OVP) certification for its network virtualization platform, which is vital to the construction of a 5G telecommunication network for the first time as a mobile carrier.

The OVP offers industrial standards on functions and verification defined by the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV), a collaborative group for developing network function virtualization-integrated platforms and issues an OVP certificate on a virtualization platform that meets 215 standards such as service continuance, automatic recoveries, and quick new services in the event of a disaster

Up until now, the OVP has been introduced and certified mainly by overseas equipment manufacturers but LG U+ succeeded in introducing the OVP and obtaining a certificate for the first time among telecommunication carriers in the world. The certification targets enterprise virtualization platforms. This certification means that LG U+ secured not only the reliability of its services internationally but also the capabilities and solutions to verify virtualization platforms based on industry standards.

In particular, LG U+ plans to contribute to the development of the Korean virtualization industry and a virtualization ecosystem by sharing its test capability and solutions with Korean equipment companies. To enable Korean equipment manufacturers to apply and verify their products directly in an environment where a virtualization platform is operated, LG U+ equipped LG Science Park in Magok near Seoul with networks, servers, other equipment and automated verification tools.

To top it off, LG+ plans to apply the OVP to all virtualization platforms to be built in 5G environments which will provide commercial services next year.

"When 5G services begin on a full scale, we can create new value by integrating the 5G services with new technologies such as cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and more," said Lee Sang-hun in charge of developing networks at LG U+. “As it is essential to optimize networks and flexibly expand infrastructure in order to process more data and provide services on time, it is more important to ensure the quality of them.”
