Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on December 9 that it has become the first comprehensive heavy industries company in Korea to receive ISO 50001 certification for energy management systems.

ISO 50001 is a standard established in June 2011 by the International Organization for Specification (ISO) to set procedures and guidelines for energy savings and efficiency management.

In November, Hyundai Heavy Industries implemented ISO 50001 in twelve facilities including Ulsan, Kunsan, and Eumsung, successfully completing certification in all facilities in seven months.

With the energy management system, Hyundai Heavy Industries, which spends approximately 200 billion won (US$190 million) a year on energy, can now save 5% of that amount, or 10 billion won (US$9.5 million), and enhance its energy-efficient image.

An energy management system saves energy (LNG, CO2, Ethylene, Oil, Oxygen) by tracking usage patterns with projected readings from a monitoring system, scaling down the amount to be used. It can also reduce greenhouse gases and prevent  resulting environmental hazards by optimizing energy use efficiency.

An official of Hyundai Heavy Industries said, “In light of growing environmental concerns, this certification will make our facilities more energy efficient and in tune with Korea’s laws on Low Carbon and Green Growth.”

Hyundai Heavy Industries received the certification from Norway DNV at its head office in Ulsan. The event was attended by Hyundai’s Senior Managing Director Kwon Young-hae and Korea DNV Certification Office head Ahn In-kyun.
