Samsung Display is expediting the commercialization of an unbreakable smartphone display.

The company announced on July 26 that it has developed an unbreakable display panel and had it certified by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an accredited test institute of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the US.

The unbreakable panel was developed by attaching a plastic cover window to a flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel. Samsung Display plans to use it not only in smartphones but also in automotive displays, military mobile devices, tablet PCs and portable game devices.

According to the UL, the unbreakable panel passed a durability test conducted in accordance with military standards set by the United States Department of Defense. Its front, side, and corners were not damaged in a drop test where the display fell to the ground from 1.2-meter height. The unbreakable panel was not broken even when it was dropped from height of 1.8 meter which is higher than the standard.
