The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) on December 3.

The PISA is conducted every three years to compare the knowledge of mathematics, science, and reading abilities of 15-year-old students from around the world.

510,000 students from 65 countries took part in the 2012 PISA, and Korea’s 5,201 students from 140 high schools and 16 middle schools participated.

According to the official report, among OCED nations Korea’s mathematics score was the highest in the maximum score range, ranked at 1st. In reading, the score was between 1st and 2nd, and in science, 2nd and 4th.

There was little change in Korea’s ranking from 2009 to 2012. From an aggregate of 65 nations, Korea’s mathematics score was between 3-6 in 2009 and 3-5 in 2012. The reading score was between 2-4 in 2009 and 3-5 in 2012, and science was between 4-7 in 2009 and 5-8 in 2012.
