Samsung Heavy Industries succeeded in being the first to put a self-developed floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) production, storage, and offloading facility on the sea. It is expected that the company will get the inside track in future bidding competitions by capitalizing on its advanced technological strength in the FLNG sector.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on December 3 that it successfully completed the launching of the Prelude on November 30. The Prelude is the world’s first FLNG facility, and Samsung won the order from Royal Dutch Shell.

It is a totally new type of maritime facility covering all of the natural gas production processes ranging from production and purification to liquefaction, storage, and offloading. Previously, natural gas extracted from gas fields had to be sent to on-land facilities via pipelines, liquefied, stored, and then transported to customers by LNG carriers. However, with the FLNG facility, the entire processes can be carried out at sea.
