SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics announced on July 3 that they succeeded in developing a switchboard exclusively for 5G that meets international 5G standard.

A 5G-only switchboard carries wireless data between a 5G base station and an Internet server. The switchboard is loaded with a variety of technologies that were difficult to implement in long-term evolution (LTE) switchboards, resulting in improved performance in ultra-fast and ultra-low latency data transmission.

The switchboard processes a transmission method for each content according to the content’s characteristics and delivers it to an Internet server. Financial and biometric information data of which security is important is transmitted through a path for adding quantum codes. Super-high-resolution images requiring fast transmission or telemedicine data requiring extremely short delay time are transmitted through a transmission accelerator.

The two companies adopted the HTTP international standard, which is generally used for web traffic transmission, which is not their standards in the 5G-only switchboard-controlled area.

The 5G-only switchboard was loaded with dynamic distributed connection technology which automatically finds optimal routes from a customer’s terminal to an Internet server. Intelligent management technology that automatically restores when problems occur is also applied to the switchboard. Both increase the stability of 5G.

In January of this year, SK Telecom published a white paper on basic technology for the 5G-only switchboard and its design by collaborating with AT&T and Deutsche Telekom and released it to the outside. SK Telecom will accelerate the development of commercial equipment following the successful application and demonstration of international standards. 5G network equipment is expected to be built next year.
