EWP to Use East Sea Gas Field as Wind Power Generation Farm

Park Il-joon, president of Korea East-West Power Co., said that the company would use the gas field offshore Ulsan as a floating wind power generation farm. East-West Power aims to increase the proportion of new and renewable energy such as wind power and solar power to 25% (5GW) of its total power generation by 2030.

"We are in talks with Ulsan City to build a floating wind power generation farm without removing the East Sea-1 Gas Field Platform being operated by Korea National Oil Corporation," Park said in a meeting with reporters at Ulsan Headquarters of his company on June 27.

East Sea Gas Field is located 58 km southeast of Ulsan. The field has been producing natural gas since 2004, but its operation will be over soon. The company’s plan is to install offshore wind power generators here without removing the gas field platform. If installed, the generators will produce 200 MW.

Among the five power plants of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea East-West Power has set the highest renewable energy target (25% in 2025).
