In June, Sony beat Apple and recaptured the top spot in the Japanese market after three years. The world’s 7th ranking smartphone manufacturer now represents 36% of the Japanese smartphone market. Samsung Electronics, on the other hand, ranked 3rd in market share, following Sony and Apple.

Sony’s success is attributable to its flagship smartphones Xperia Z and Xperia A.

What is remarkable is that the firm lagged far behind Apple and Samsung in market share before reclaiming its number one position.

Sony officially announced that it aims to become the third largest smartphone maker in the world, after Apple and Samsung, through its flagship smartphones.

The company’s recovery is noticeable in the Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV market. According to market research firm DisplaySearch, the Japanese company was the top UHD TV manufacturer in the world in the first half of this year, making up 37.8% of the total. LG Electronics followed, accounting for 14.2% of the global market. Samsung only ranked 7th with a 4% market share.

These results show that Sony is dominating the UHD TV market, even though Korean electronics companies consider UHD TVs to be a trump card that can make up for poor sales in the TV market.
