Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. is planning to establish a production system for 23 environmentally friendly cars by 2020.

According to a Hyundai-Kia Motors’ new vehicle project plan on April 12, the two companies will build the largest production system in history for 23 eco-friendly vehicles, such as hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV), in its plants in South Korea by 2020. They are adding eight more new models in 15 green car models now on the market.

Accordingly, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors will secure the eco-friendly car production system for 12 models and 11 models, respectively, in 2020.

The two companies are seeking to expand their green car production system in order to respond to stricter environmental regulations in the U.S. and China, the two largest car markets in the world.

Last year, Hyundai Motor said, “We need to respond to the percentage of zero-emission vehicle obligatory sale in California in the U.S. and the percentage of green vehicle obligatory production in China. We will expand our environmentally friendly car lineups from the current 13 to 38 by 2025.”
