HMM to Place Orders for 20 Eco-Friendly Mega Container Vessels

Hyundai Merchant Marine will place orders for 20 eco-friendly mega container ships in line with the government’s five-year plan to rebuild the Korean shipping industry.

The plan, announced on April 5, includes the government’s vision to grow Hyundai Merchant Marine into one of the top 10 shipping companies in the world.

On April 10, Hyundai Merchant Marine said that it would prepare to order a total of 20 super-large container ships –- 12 20,000-TEU container vessels for the Asia-Northern Europe service and eight 14,000-TEU container carriers for the east coast of North America –- to put them to work beginning in 2020.  

On the day, the Korean shipping company will start to work on selecting shipyards by sending requests for proposals to Korean shipbuilders.
