GM International President Barry Engle is visiting South Korea, for the sixth time this year alone, to have talks with unionized GM Korea workers. Much attention is being paid to whether the talks will lead to a labor-management agreement, which is essential for the company to survive.

The GM International president is scheduled to meet with the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and the Korea Development Bank (KDB) on April 11. During the meeting, he is likely to inform them of the GM headquarters’ stance on due diligence on GM Korea, such as the scope of data to be provided.

The KDB, which is conducting temporary due diligence, is going to complete the process on April 20, which is earlier than scheduled. The GM headquarters also set the date as the deadline for the labor-management agreement.

Still, GM Korea employers and employees are making no concession at all. The seventh wage negotiation on March 30 broke down as the labor union demanded a clear answer about Gunsan Plant shutdown and the management said that the decision would not be overturned in any case. The eighth negotiation is scheduled for April 12, immediately after the talks between the labor union and the GM International President.
