Global Smartphone Sales

With its smartphone sales per quarter reaching 90 million units for the first time, Samsung Electronics beat Apple by over 50 million units sold. On the other hand, LG Electronics showed some slowdown in its Q3 smartphone sales, handing over third place to China’s Huawei.

According to Strategy Analytics, an American market surveying company, Samsung Electronics sold 88.4 million smartphones in Q3, ranking first place in sales. Its market share reached 35.2%, which is the highest it has ever been. In other words, one out of every three smartphones sold around the world in Q3 was made by Samsung Electronics.

Apple, after releasing the iPhone5S last month, sold 33.8 million units, with an increase of 2.6 million in sales compared to last quarter. However, its market share dropped 0.2%. Thus, the actual difference in sales between Samsung and Apple is 55 million, the highest yet. Simply looking at the numbers, Samsung sold about 2.6 times more smartphones than did Apple. However, SA Analyst Neil Mawston said, “Apple will get back on track in Q4 with its iPhone5S.”

Following Samsung and Apple, Huawei sold 12.7 million units (5.1%), ranking in third place. LG Electronics, who continued to rank third place in Q1 and Q2, ended up selling 12 million (4.8%), which is 100K less than last quarter and down a rank. Also, China’s Lenovo sold 10.8 million (4.3%), closely chasing LG Electronics.

Neil Mawston said, “Samsung’s strategic product, the Galaxy S4, actually saw reduced sales, but the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Y had good sales, creating this result.”

The size of the global smartphone market in Q3 is 251.4 million, which grew 45% compared to last year. SA explained that six out of ten mobile phones are smartphones.
