On February 23, the Ministry of Science & ICT held the sixth National High Performance Computing (HPC) Committee meeting and deliberated on and finalized the Second National Basic Plan for HPC Promotion. According to the plan, South Korea is going to develop a supercomputer capable of performing 1 quadrillion calculations per second within five years.

Based on the First National Basic Plan, which continued from 2013 to 2017, South Korea joined the global top 10 list in terms of supercomputing infrastructure. Based on the second plan, the government is going to come up with a supercomputer for use in Industry 4.0 by implementing three action plans.

Firstly, it is planning to expand the use of HPC in a variety of fields while supporting research groups utilizing petascale HPC and above based on high-accuracy and large-capacity data analysis. Petascale computing means 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

Secondly, the government is planning to set up a roadmap for securing national HPC resources so that various future demands can be met in a timely manner. In this regard, a national flagship system for national strategic goals and daily living is established along with smaller and purpose-specific systems.

Lastly, the government works on petascale computing with industries and research institutes so that South Korea does not have to rely on imported HPC techniques. At the same time, it develops next-generation semiconductor technology, quantum computing, and so on as tools for replacing HPC systems.
