Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced that the third unit of the Shingori Nuclear Power Plant has been in safe operation without stopping for 389 days since the completion of its construction in December 2016 and that its first preventive maintenance is implemented on January 12.

The third unit is an APR-1400 reactor developed by South Korea. It is better than previous 1 GW models in terms of efficiency and convenience as well as safety. In addition, its power generation capacity is approximately 1.4 GW and it has been designed to be in operation for 60 years whereas the previous models can be in operation for up to 40 years. The power plant South Korea exported to the UAE is based on the APR-1400 reactor.

“The third unit of the Shingori Nuclear Power Plant remained in operation for 389 days although newly developed power plants tend to show various errors until stabilization,” KHNP explained, adding, “This means that South Korea is a top-class nuclear power plant builder and operator and we hope more nuclear power plants will be exported based on the accomplishment.”

The third unit of the power plant has generated 13,730 GWh of electricity so far. It is equivalent to 67% of the electricity Busan City used in 2016 and 43% of the electricity Ulsan City used during the same period. The preventive maintenance is scheduled to continue for about three months.
