According to CNET, fingerprint sensor manufacturer Synaptics unveiled Clear ID FS9500 on December 12. It is a fingerprint recognition scanner built into a display.

CNET reported that Synaptics is currently manufacturing Clear ID FS9500 and it is likely to be used in products supplied by Samsung Electronics.

Apple is unlikely to adopt Clear ID FS9500 because it adopted Face ID instead of a fingerprint recognition scanner in the iPhone X. Apple said in October this year that no touch ID will be used in the iPhone X and the iPhone scheduled to be released next year will also use Face ID.

According to Synaptics, the new Clear ID fingerprint scanner has been designed for use in mobile phones equipped with the Infinity display. This term has been mentioned often by Samsung Electronics with regard to the large bezel-less screens of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8. This is why CNET said that the scanner is likely to be used in the Galaxy S9.

Samsung Electronics and Synaptics worked with each other until 2005 for the former’s B310. When Synaptics released the FS9100 optical fingerprint sensor earlier, rumors circulated that it would be used in the Galaxy S8. It is in this context that CNET reported the Galaxy phone to make its debut next year will adopt Synaptics’ built-in fingerprint scanner.

A fingerprint recognition scanner built into a display makes a good pair with a bezel-less smartphone. Last year, the Galaxy S8 was released without a home button and with a fingerprint recognition scanner on the back. The scanner on the back, however, has caused fingerprints to be left on the camera lens in many cases. According to Synaptics, the new fingerprint recognition scanner is twice as fast as Apple’s 3D face ID.
