With the confirmation of the 5G frequency bandwidth global standard, a technical infrastructure for a 5G frequency auction has been put in place.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) confirmed the 5G frequency “channel maximum bandwidth” standard. The 3GPP decided to set a 100 MHz width in frequencies below 6 GHz and a 400 MHz width in frequencies above 6 GHz as the maximum bandwidths of 5G-only frequencies. It is expected that the 5G commercialization will be accelerated as core standards that will sway frequency auctions and technology standardization were decided.

If you want to use a frequency that exceeds the maximum bandwidth, you can connect two or more different frequencies and use them by applying carrier aggregation (CA) technology. Theoretically, it is possible to realize a speed of up to 20Gbps by connecting two or more 400 MHz frequencies. 5G-only frequencies will be composed of connection bandwidths that do not have separations between uploads and downloads and operate in the time division duplex (TDD) mode in which data are transmitted according to time differences.

The 3GPP will finalize and announce the above-mentioned widest bandwidth technology for 5G frequencies at the 78th Wireless Subcommittee (3GPP RAN # 78) meeting to be held in Portugal next month.

The confirmation of the 5G frequency bandwidth global standard means that a technical infrastructure for a 5G frequency auction scheduled to be implemented next year by the Ministry of Science and ICT has been put in place.

The Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea is preparing to sell off the 3.5GHz bandwidth (3.4 GHz to 3.7GHz, a total of 300MHz bandwidths) and 28GHz band (26.5 GHz - 29.5GHz, a total of 3GHz bandwidths) in next year's frequency auction among 5G frequency candidates. As the maximum unit of a frequency block for each bandwidth was confirmed, it became possible to compose auction items in various ways.

Accordingly, a 400MHz width will be the basic unit in the auction for the 28 GHz frequency. In terms of technology, various block configurations such as 100MHz, 200MHz and 400MHz are possible in the maximum bandwidth range of 400MHz. However, considering frequency utilization efficiency to achieve the maximum speed, the government is likely to compose offerings based on the 400MHz standard.

In this case, among the entire 3 GHz bandwidth of the 28 GHz bandwidth, a package of seven 400 MHz bandwidth blocks (a total of 2800 MHz bandwidths) and one 200 MHz block can be formed, creating the promotion of competition among business operators.

In the 3.5 GHz bandwidth, a 300 MHz width can be auctioned off after being divided into a maximum 100 MHz widths.  This case can spark off competition which follows a system where blocks have 50 MHz width, half of 100 MHz width which is the largest channel width. However, mobile service carriers want to connect 5G frequencies as wide as they can be. Prior to the confirmation of a 5G frequency auction method, how to combine blocks and use them in the maximum unit will be a hot issue.

"We are considering the maximum bandwidth determined by the 3GPP an important auction factor in technology," said an official of the Ministry of Science and ICT. "The 5G frequency allocation plan study group will decide the auction unit and widths considering mobile carriers’ demand, market trends and efficiency and use among others.”

In addition, the establishment of core standards for 5G commercialization is expected to accelerate the development of related equipment and terminal technology. Engineers will be able to design 5G equipment and terminals with 100MHz and 400MHz widths as the minimum units. As the bandwidth is determined, the development of millimeter-wave antenna technology standards and others will gain momentum.

Meanwhile, the 3GPP is planning to complete the Release 15 standard, which corresponds to the primary 5G standard, in June of this year.
