The Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea said on November 6 that it has developed and commercialized YouVR, a mobile application that will enable the production of virtual reality (VR) content without any specialized hardware, with VR solution startup Nextaeon.

So far, separate cameras or the specialized hardware like multi-camera rig have been needed to produce 360-degree VR content. Stitching software are also necessary to connect the photos taken by multiple cameras at the same time. Because of such inconveniences, a much smaller number of contents are made compared to the users’ interest in the VR.

It’s very easy and simple to use the application. Just downloading of the app You VR enables a smartphone user to create VR content in which objects can move 360 degrees. The app can produce 360-degree VR content by taking pictures along with 16 points indicated in the window without any wireless rotator that moves smartphone cameras.

The research team also developed hybrid video technology to overlay video on the 360-degree VR photos to support for the needs of video.

In addition, the app provides users with a platform which connects the taken 360-degree VR photos to produce content and enables them to apply it to a variety of industries such as real estate, shopping malls and travel.

In September, the co-developer Nextaeon launched the YouVR app and established a US subsidiary in Silicon Valley last year, eyeing an expansion into the US real estate market.
