SK Telecom announced on October 19 that the company expanded the next generation AI network “TANGO” (T Advanced Advanced Generation OSSOperational Supporting System) to the field of telecommunication networks.

It took about two years for SK Telecom to complete the development of the TANGO. It is a big data analysis- and machine learning-based AI network management system. The TANGO finds and solves network problems and optimizes itself.

SK Telecom has applied the TANGO to its fixed-line network since December of last year and expanded it to the wireless network this time.

"The TANGO can be likened to a technology that artificial intelligence monitors the human body's functions and abnormality and automatically finds the best treatment method when problems occur," the company said.

Last month, SK Telecom exported Tango by forging strategic partnership on a transfer of AI network technology with India's Bharti, the world's third largest telecom company.

The TANGO optimizes network quality based on machine learning. The AI network automatically optimizes the quality based on traffic information by region and time zone and boosts efficiency by informing a specialized manager of the best response when network anomalies are detected.

In addition, the TANGO analyzes the status of the network in real time and manages the quality of customers’ experience. In addition, virtualization technology is applied to the TANGO so the TANGO can quickly apply new network functions such as the IoT and 5G.

"AI network operation technology based on big data analysis is essential in the 5G era," said Park Jin-hyo, director of the Network Technology Research Center at SK Telecom. “SK Telecom will further enhance the functions of the TANGO to provide the best network quality to its customers."
