Lee Woong-beom, president of LG Chem's Battery Business Division and chairman of the Korea Battery Industry Association), once again confirmed the world’s first mass production of NCM811 batteries for electric vehicles. In the industry, LG Chem and SK Innovation are expected to intensify a war of nerve over this battery.

"Yes," Lee briefly answered at the "InterBattery 2017" exhibition held at COEX in Seoul on September 27 in response to a question, “Are you still sure about the world's first mass production of NCM811 batteries? Asked about the time of production, he said, "I cannot comment because of our relationships with corporate customers."

An NCM811 battery is composed of three materials –- nickel (80%), cobalt (10%) and manganese (10%). It was reported that SK Innovation was preparing to roll out the world's first NCM811 battery in the third quarter. The electric car equipped with this battery is said to be able to travel up to 450km at one charge. SK Innovation said that the company confirmed that the battery was already verified by car makers and shows strong confidence in its technology.

"I read in a newspaper that SK Innovation will mass produce NCM811 batteries in the third quarter of next year," president Lee of LG Chem said at a meeting with secondary cell battery industry organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on September 8. “We will mass-produce them in advance of SK Innovation.
