Samsung Electronics took the wrap off the world's first 128GB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) for next-generation memories for automobiles.
Samsung Electronics announced on September 26 that it will produce the world's first “eUFS memory” semiconductors for cars with faster speed and stronger stability.
In January 2015, Samsung Electronics is creating demand for premium memories by expanding its eUFS lineup to include in-car memory after beginning mass production of the mobile 128GB eUFS for smartphones.
A 128GB eUFS is a memory product optimized for the next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and infotainment and dashboard systems of high-end cars that perform various multimedia functions through connections with smart devices.
A 128GB eUFS achieves continuous read speed of 850MB/s and random read speed of 45,000IOP (Input / Output Operations Per Second) with the highest level of internal memory performance. The card runs 3.4 times and 6.4 times faster than an embedded Multi Media Card (eMMC) 5.0 product, respectively. The card can double its storage capacity even though it is as big as an eMMC 5.0 product, giving a boost to cars’ performance and drivers’ convenience.
In addition to satisfying the JEDEC UFS 2.1 standard, a 128GB eUFS maximizes a temperature detection function by enabling a data refreshing function and a temperature detection function required for JEDECUFS 3.0 to be standardized.
The data refresh function has the advantage of extending service life and dialing up reliability, which is essential to automotive semiconductors by moving data to a new cell and maintaining the reading and writing characteristics of the data for a long time.
Heat resistance holds the key to automotive memories due to heat generated from engines and running. An eUFS internal controller for automobiles is equipped with a sensor function that can detect the temperature, thereby achieving high stability, Samsung Electronics explained.
