The Asia-Pacific region countries, including South Korea, China and Japan, are teaming together to research on frequencies for 5G mobile telecommunications to secure early both 5G frequencies and their position as leaders in the technology.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced it is going to host the 22nd AWG-22 meeting from the 25th to the 29th of this month.

This year’s meeting is attended by 200 representatives from 23 member countries of the “Asia-Pacific Telecommunity” (APT), which discusses the promotion of Asia-Pacific telecommunications development and the organization and expansion of telecommunications networks.

The research will deal with the sharing of bandwidth over 24㎓ as a clear part of the migration from the previous generation’s wired-wireless communications infrastructure to 5G. It is expected to spark discussions related to new technology in wireless communications, such as the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and wireless charging.

On September 26 (Tuesday), the ministry and APT will be co-hosting an open workshop with two sessions on “The Digital Revolution and Wireless Communications.” KT and Huawei will introduce the first session, which discusses the international standardization status and the degree of development of intelligent transport system (ITS), a key technology for self-driving cars.

At the second session, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and SK Telecom unveil the current preparation status of businesses at home and abroad as well as international cooperation methods, for administering frequency bands of operation for the Internet of Things (IoT).
