The International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC), a major international event in the field of eco-friendly energy, will be held in Seoul from October 23 to 26, 2019.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) announced on September 15 that the ministry succeeded in catching the right to host the IREC in 2019 after a fierce competition with Australia at the 2017 IREC held in Mexico City on September 14 (local time). IREC is an international general congress hosted by the REN21 headquartered in France, an international nonprofit organization in the field of renewable energy. The event is held every two years.

About 4,000 people including minister-level officials of energy ministries of countries, those from new and renewable energy associations, energy industry CEOs, and NGO representatives attend high-level round tables, exhibitions, seminars, panel discussions, workshops and take a tour of new and renewable energy facilities.

According to the MOTIE, REN21 which manages the event praised the fact that Korea is the first country in Asia to declare a phase-out from nuclear- and coal-fired power plants and is promoting energy conversion policies based on new and renewable energy.

"The IREC in Korea will be a good opportunity to expand Korean companies' advancement into overseas markets by informing the international community of Korea’s will to spread new and renewable energy and nurture its related industries,” said Park Won-ju, director of the Energy Resources Department at the MOTIE.
