LG CNS and LG Electronics announced on September 14 that they have won an order from Incheon International Airport for South Korea’s first artificially-intelligent robots.

The two companies is planning to introduce AI robots in June next year by integrating LG Electronics’ competitiveness of autonomous robot manufacturing technology and LG CNS’ capacity to establish wireless communications-based robot control systems. The AI-powered robots will also go into pilot operation during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to be held in February next year.

It is the largest AI robot deal in South Korea. A total of 14 robots will count how many people are waiting to get through immigration and tell travelers locations of various facilities including departure gates and luggage counters.

LG CNS will monitor and control robots by connecting its robot service platform with the airport internal system to provide various services. When the airport system notifies the robots of how busy immigration desks are, the robots will inform users of immigrations desks with a less waiting time, improving consumer convenience.

With the latest deal, the two companies are planning to advance systems and strengthen cooperation in order to expand robot business to major airports in Europe and the Middle East.

Cho In-haeng, vice president of the Internet of Things (IoT) business division at LG CNS, said, “LG CNS will provide robot services that are optimized to the airport environment through the deal and aggressively develop the AI-powered robot service market that is linked with the IoT by making use of the competence in system integration that is accumulated in various industries.”
