Samsung SDI is launching a variety of products that will lead the popularization of electric vehicles (EVs) at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA Cars 2017) which kicked off on September 12.

The most eye-catching product is a multi-function battery pack. This product can freely control the number of modules as desired like putting books on bookshelves. For example, if a user installs 20 modules in a premium car, the user can drive 600km to 700km. If you install 10 to 12 units in an entry-level car, you can drive 300km.

On automakers’ part, they can create platforms by designing vehicles of various distances in one pack so the battery pack can significantly interest automakers, a Samsung representative said.

Samsung SDI also exhibited another breakthrough product called “Low Heightcell.” This cell can reduce the height of space for batteries inside a vehicle by applying a cell with a height reduction of up to 20% compared to existing cells. When the height of space for battery loading is reduced, space utilization becomes easy and EVs of various designs can be developed.

Moreover, Samsung SDI introduced “21700 Cell and Module,” a new standard model among circular batteries. 21700 Battery is 21mm in diameter and 70mm tall and has a 50% more capacity than existing 18650 Battery (diameter: 18mm, height: 65mm). 21700 Battery is evaluated to have cost competitiveness with an optimal size to maximize its capacity, life and output at the same time.

21700 Battery is applied to a variety of applications including electric vehicles, ESSs, power tools so is garnering much attention as a standard battery among cylindrical batteries.
