South Korea's shipbuilding industry received new orders of 130,000 CGTs (9 ships) in August.

 

South Korea's shipbuilding industry received 130,000 CGTs (9 ships) in August, claiming the top spot in the world’s monthly new orders in three months.

According to Clarkson Research, a shipbuilding industry analyst firm in the UK on September 5, global shipbuilding orders amounted to 515,000 CGTs (33 vessels) in August. This volume is one third of July's 1.57 million CGTs (44 vessels).

By country, Korea ranked highest with 130,000 CGTs (9 vessels), followed by China with 110,000 CGTs (7 vessels) and Japan with 40,000 CGTs (2 vessels).

By August of this year, global orders added up to 1273 million CGTs (489 vessels), up 3.7 million CGTs from 903 million CGTs (404 vessels) in the same period a year ago.

By country, China chalked up 422,000 CGTs (195 vessels), followed by Korea with 348,000 CGTs (104 vessels), and Japan with 109,000 CGTs (58 vessels).

Global order backlogs at the end of August announced by Clarkson Research stood at 74.71 million CGTs. Order backlogs by countries were 25.83 million CGTs of China, 16.12 million CGTs of Japan and 16.1 million CGTs of Korea.

According to a survey, the prices of super-size container ships more than 16,000 TEUs shrank by US$ 1 million per ship from July. So did the prices of 174,000-cubic-meter LNG tankers.
