Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors set up vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication infrastructure equipment at seven intersections in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province. The base stations for V2X communications, CCTV cameras for pedestrian detection, traffic signal controllers capable of transmitting traffic signal information, and so on are installed in road sections with a total distance of 14 km.

The two companies are planning to use about 50 vehicles equipped with V2X communication devices in the area in order to test their vehicle-to-vehicle data exchange services, vehicle-to-infrastructure data exchange services, etc. In the vehicles, navigation systems, head-up displays, and monitors for V2X communications communicate with drivers in the form of various images, alarm sounds and the like. Five are scheduled to be used for public purposes by the Hwaseong City Hall.

The two automakers announced that the research activities will continue until the end of this year so that their V2X systems can be improved. They also said that they will come up with commercial V2X services in step with the progress of the South Korean government’s highway infrastructure project for connected cars with a target year of 2020.

“Autonomous driving systems based solely on sensors have their own limitations under adverse weather conditions and, as such, V2X communications technology is essential for better autonomous driving,” they explained.
