SK Broadband announced that the company will provide a tentative 10 Gbps internet service to some customers in the Seoul and Anyang areas for the first time in Korea.

If it takes eight seconds to download a1GB content via a giga internet service, it takes 0.8 second to download the large content through a 10Gbps internet service. This is 10 times faster than a giga internet service and 100 times faster than an optical LAN (100Mbps) service.

SK Broadband will provide the tentative 10-gigabit Internet service using NG-PON2 (next generation-passive optical network 2) technology based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)’s international standard technology jointly developed with SK Telecom Network Technology Institute last year. NG-PON2 technology is optical subscriber network technology capable of transmitting up to 40 Gbps traffic. The company enabled a stable 10G internet service to customers by securing an up to 40 Gbps transmission speed from the telecommunication company (a base with the main equipment that manages traffic) to equipment near customers.

The company is planning to additionally acquire 100 gigabit transmission technology by 2020. The provision of a 10 giga internet service is expected to accelerate the commercialization and popularization of realistic videos such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), contents for 8K ultra high quality (UHD) broadcast, hologram multi views and multi angle IPTV.
