The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) announced on July 31 that it signed a contract with the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands to initiate the OYSTER Project and equipment supply for the project begins this month according to the contract.

The purpose of the OYSTER Project is to renovate the HOR, the university’s 54-year-old research reactor, by installing a cold neutron facility. Then, atom-level material observation becomes possible by the use of neutrons generated during nuclear fission.

The project is estimated to cost 26.5 billion won (US$in total. A consortium consisting of the KAERI, Hyundai Engineering and Hyundai E&C is scheduled to run the project, which continues until 2019. “We hope that a success of the project will lead to new orders in the Netherlands for building new research reactors,” said the institute.
