Apple’s sales volume ranking fell from fourth to fifth and Xiaomi rose to the fourth spot in the Chinese smartphone market between the first and second quarters of this year, according to market research firm Canalys.

Although Apple does not disclose its sales data by country, its sales volume for the second quarter is estimated to be less than that of Xiaomi, which reached 15 million units during the period. Xiaomi is currently trying to boost its sales by online marketing.

In the meantime, Huawei sold 23 million units and came in first. It was followed by Oppo and Vivo. Oppo’s sales volume totaled 21 million units, up 37% from a year ago. Vivo sold 16 million smartphones in China in the second quarter of this year.

The market research firm added that Samsung Electronics showed a year-on-year decline in sales volume during the same period but remained on the top 10 list. The firm did not disclose the names of those that came in sixth to tenth.

“In the Chinese smartphone market, the top five brands account for 75% of the total sales volume and the top four manufacturers’ market shares are continuing to rise,” Canalys explained, adding, “Utilization of various online and offline sales and marketing channels holds the key to the success in that market.”
