Boosted by Samsung Electronics

Samsung Group’s market capitalization reached the 500 trillion won (US$437.45 billion) mark on July 11. According to the Korea Exchange and Koscom, the combined market capitalization of 23 Samsung affiliates’ listed stocks, including preferred stocks, stood at 503.35 trillion won (US$440.38 billion) as of the 11th, up 3.6 trillion won (US$3.15 billion) from 499.72 trillion won (US$437.2 billion) at the previous day.

Samsung Group’s market capitalization increased by 108.56 trillion won (US$94.98 billion), or 27.5 percent, in six months from 394.79 trillion won (US$345.4 billion) at the end of last year. In particular, market heavyweight Samsung Electronics recorded its highest performance ever in the second quarter, boosted by a boom in the semiconductor market. This has led to the increase in Samsung Group’s market capitalization.

In fact, Samsung Electronics share price closed at 2,494,000 won (US$2,181.98) on the 11th, up 44,000 won (US$38.50), or 1.8 percent, from 2450,000 won (US$2,143.48) at the previous day, reaching a new record for three days in a row. Its high point during the mid-day trading rose to 2,500,000 won (US$2,187.23) on the same day, hitting a new high.

Accordingly, Samsung Electronics’ market capitalization rose by 5.75 trillion won (US$5.03 billion), or 1.8 percent, to 325.89 trillion won (US$285.12 billion) from 320.14 trillion won (US$280.09 million) at the previous day. The figure also grew by 72.38 trillion won (US$63.33 billion), or 28.55 percent, in six months from 253.5 trillion won (US$221.79 million) at the end of last year.

Samsung Electronics (72.38 trillion won or US$63.33 billion), accounted for 66.67 percent of the total increase of Samsung Group’s market capitalization (108.56 trillion won or US$94.98 billion) this year. The stock prices of Samsung Electronics made up 72.95 percent of the total increase of Samsung Group’s market capitalization, including 6.81 trillion won (US$5.96 billion) of the increase of Samsung Electronics’ market capitalization

In addition, Samsung Electronics’ portion in Samsung Group’s total market capitalization stood at 64.74 percent. The portion goes up to 71.94 percent.

Meanwhile, Samsung Group accounted for 32.34 percent of 1.558 quadrillion won (US$1.35 trillion) of the total market capitalization of the KOSPI.
